Michael Falk writes in his e-mail message of 12-Nov-92:

Will your product run if we upgrade our SUN machine from SunOS 4.1.2
to Solaris 2.1? In other words, SunOS 4.1.2 and Solaris 2.1 are
not binary compatible. However, Solaris 2.1 has a 4.1.3 compatibility
mode which is sufficient for many products. SUN suggests, however,
that we contact each vendor and ask if their product will continue to
run in compatibility mode or not.

GAP makes very moderate demands with respect to the operation system
interface. Thus I expect that it will run without problems in the
compatibility mode. I cannot say for certain, because we don't have
Suns.

If there are any problems, one can always recompile the source for GAP.
For this you need a C compiler of course. I understand that Solaris 2.1
does not contain a C compiler by default, and that you have to purchase
it as a separate product (I think you or your system administrator should
complain with Sun about that). If there are problems with GAP running in
the compatibility mode, and you will not have a C compiler, I suggest
that you ask in this forum again. I am certain that you will find a kind
soul willing to send you an executable.

Martin.
