Dear Forum,

I have installed - with some trouble - on a Pentium PC with windows 95
GAP4.1.
There is one trouble, also noted in Chapter 70.19 of the manual:

Has anybody experience, what is to do, to get that Caret

Are you using the native M$-shell to run GAP?

If yes, you can try getting a saner shell.
For instance, install Cygwin
(see http://sourceware.cygnus.com/cygwin)
This is not so hard, not much harder than installing GAP.
(and it uses less disk space than full distribution of GAP, as well :-))

It comes with a unix-style shell, bash.
There was also a "native" port of bash to Windows (probably only
to Windows NT).

Best,
Dmitrii
