Dear forum members,

Is there an analogue of the 'GroupId' command in GAP4?
In GAP3, this command allowed to identify the isomorphism type of
a given group of order < 100 and sometimes gave a generic name.

There is a function 'IdGroup' which returns the place of a
given group in the small groups catalogue. Hence you can use
it to identity the type of your groups just as well as with
'GroupId' in GAP 3. However, IdGroup and GroupId are not really
compatible, since they refer to two different catalogues and thus
they might return different numbers.

The small groups catalogue in GAP 4b4 contains the groups
of order at most 1000 except 512 and 768. In GAP 4b5 the
groups whose order factorises in at most 3 primes and the
groups of order 2^n p for n <= 8 and p an odd prime (and
thus the groups of order 768) will be included as well.

Generic names for the groups are not (yet) implemented.

Best wishes, Bettina
